Our District is Maramech Hill. http://maramechhill.us/ Council – Make of various districts. The “Three Fires Council” is made up of 12 Districts. http://www.threefirescouncil.org/ Origin of Three Fire Council In the early 1800's, Shabbona was a principal chief of the Ottawa, Potawatomi, and Chippewa group of tribes which banded together to form "The Three Fires." Shabbona camped briefly in a large grove one-half mile south of Shabbona, IL. He fought with the British in the War of 1812 and later helped the settlers of northern Illinois by warning of Indian uprisings during the Winnebago outbreak. In the Black Hawk War, Shabbona alerted pioneers to impending Indian raids and offered to lead an attack against the Sauk and Fox Tribes. The name Three Fires Council pays tribute to the Native Americans who once populated this area, as well as taking inspiration from the idea of working together as a new council, drawing strength from the foundations created by the former DuPage and Two Rivers councils, and looking ahead to the future as the Three Fires Council. The name was suggested by a Webelos Cub Scout in 1992. The council strip was designed by Rick House. Pinewood Derby When: January 10th 2009 8am – 2pm Oswego High School (across from East Elementary) Who: Dan Metzger and Ed Arnolde are leading this event. We will be passing out Pinewood Derby Cars at the December Pack meeting. For those of you new to cub scouting don’t wait until the last minute to work on these cars with your boy. This is the one event that your boy will remember the rest of his life. Win or lose it’s a good bonding time. It is important that boys follow the rules in creating their car. We can be a little loose with the rules as a pack but cars getting to the next level definitely need to be within guidelines. (See end of newsletter) **SIBLINGS CAN PARTICIPATE** The Pack always has a division for non Cub Scouts at the Pinewood Derby. If you are interested in doing this the Pinewood Derby cars
February 2009 February 21 – Blue and Gold Dinner are $7/each. Please let Michelle Hartman know as soon as possible if you would like to purchase other cars. We will need to collect money for this at the December pack meeting. cam1201@sbcglobal.net

Pop Corn Sales RESULTS

When: COMPLETED!!! HOORAY!!!

Thank you all for helping in the effort. This is a major funding raiser for the Pack and it was very successfully. We raised just over $3,000.

A very special thank you to Jennifer and Heidi for leading this effort.

Pancake Breakfast RESULTS

When: COMPLETED!! HOORAY!!!

Another successful Pancake Breakfast! This year we raised nearly $500. Thank you to Frank Wallace and Julie Gates for putting this event together.

Keith’s Car Care – Mini Fund Raiser

I promised no more fund raisers for the year. This one doesn’t count. Keith’s Car Care in Oswego has offered us a fantastic opportunity (78 Stonehill Rd, Oswego, IL 60543 630-5548911 www.keithscarcare.com).

The Pack has been authorized to sell $25 Savings Cards. The Saving Card entitles you to one of the following:

-Free Oil Change & 27-Point Safety Check -Free 2 Wheel Alignment Check -Free Oil Change & Tire Rotation -10% off any service your Vehicle Needs.

The pack gets to keep the $25. If your car needs any service or oil change in the next year it’s really a no brainer. If you or someone you know might be interested we will be selling these at a table at the December 15th Pack Meeting.

Pack 363 Roster as of 10/2/2008

We expect additional scouts to join over the coming weeks. You should hear from your Den Leader shortly. Remember Cub Scouting is run 100% by busy parent volunteers. It may take a week or so for Den Leaders to get prepared to run their den (this is particular true for new Tiger leaders.) Your patience is greatly appreciated.

Roundtables

On the first Thursday of every month the distinct comes together for a training and planning meeting. I highly recommend you attend some of these meetings. Meetings are held at:

Yorkville Congregational Church

Pinewood Derby Rules

General Information:

  1. o Pack registration must be done in advance. Racer names can be submitted day of race.
  2. o The races will begin at 10 am on Saturday morning.
  3. o Check-in will be from 9 am – 10 am on Saturday morning.
    1. o Winning cars in each class should be held for safekeeping by the Pack until after the district derby is held. This will avoid possible damage to cars
    2. between each pack’s derby and the district derby. Each pack can make that determination.
  4. o Attendance is NOT required for scouts to race.

The specifications below will be strictly adhered to for the Pinewood Derby. These rules supersede the rules that were provided in the Pinewood Derby kit. Special attention should be paid to Rule 6, axle location and Rule 12, wheels (especially tread indicators).

  1. Cars are to be made from the Official Boy Scout Pinewood Derby Kit. Replacement kits are available at either of the two Scout Shops. The front of the car must not have a notch
  2. Any replacement parts shall be Official Cub Scout Pinewood Derby parts.
  3. Minimum ground clearance must be 3/8 inch as measured between the car and the track. Weights may need to be recessed into the body to maintain this clearance.
  4. The length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
  5. The width of the car shall not exceed 2-3/4 inches. Minimum width between wheels shall not be less than 1-3/4 inches. Car body can be narrower than 1-3/4 inches, but the wheels must be a minimum of 1-3/4 inches wide so the car will straddle the track.
  6. Axle Location – All cars must use slots in original block for axle placement. No changes in axle distance will be allowed. Axle distance is 4 3/8 inches from the center of the front axle to the center of the back axle.
  7. The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces (or 5.04 ounces on a scale that measures in hundredth of an ounce at that will read as 5.0 on scales only measuring tenths). No loose or liquid materials of any kind are permitted in or on the car. The car may be hollowed out and built up to the maximum weight provided the weight is securely fastened to the vehicle.
  8. Wheel Bearing: Washers, bearings, and bushings are prohibited.
  9. Springs: The car shall not ride on any type of springs.
  10. Detailing: Details such as steering wheel, driver, decals, painting, and interior detail are permissible a long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width, or weight. All details must be permanently attached.
  11. No solid axles (i.e. Pine Car brand) will be allowed. Only axles as provided with the Official Pinewood derby kit will be allowed (4 nails, 1 per wheel). No wheel covers or hubcaps are allowed.
  12. Wheels. Cars must be run with official BSA wheels. The wheels may not be altered with holes drilled in the side or tread width narrowed. Tread (indicators) marks on the outside edge of the wheel must be clearly visible on all 4 wheels. Only light sanding and polishing of the mold imperfections on the outside of the wheel will be allowed. A wheel CANNOT be tapered to a sharp edge or radius (See picture)
  13. Each car must be free-wheeling with no starting device.
  14. Each car must pass inspection by the Official Inspectors before it may compete. The Inspectors have the right to disqualify cars which do not meet these specifications. Inspectors may allow minor weight adjustments due to scale differences.
  15. Graphite or other dry type lubricants will be the only lubricants allowed. No other types will be permitted. Lubrication must be done prior to official inspection only. PLEASE LUBRICATE THE FRICTION POINTS, NOT THE OUTSIDE OF THE WHEEL.
  16. No handling of car after car receives official inspection approval.
  17. Cars raced in previous years are not allowed.
  18. Judges’ determinations as to race winners are final.
  19. Scoring: Every car will run 6 times, one time on each lane. The finishing positions for each rank will be awarded based on the lowest total time for the car after 6 passes down the track. In the highly unlikely event that there is a tie after 6 runs, all cars that are tied for a position will draw a lane and will make one pass down that lane. The position that they finish will be used to break the tie.
  20. If your car does not meet these specifications, it will not be permitted to run at the Race.

GOOD LUCK AND GOOD RACING!!!!
